Windows Live Writer - Blogger sign-in issue.

Some time ago I encountered a surprising situation: Windows Live Writer (which I widely use for blogging) stopped working with My blogs (on Blogger), showing the message about possible wrong password or user name - although I am sure all was correct. Some people reported different version of this error message, like for example: "Can't connect to your blog server. Unable to connect to remote server. Please try fixing the problem and try again".

It seems this is a matter of changing Google's security policy. What is the most surprising is the scale of impact which that one change had - because it affected on many other programs (like, for example, AquaMail - a mail app on Android, The Mail app on iPhone or iPad, The Mail app on Windows phone, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird...), making them not able to work properly.

Fortunately the solution is quick and easy:

  1. Log-in to Your GMail.
  2. Visit this site.
  3. Turn on the option called "Access for less secure apps".

Here is Google's explanation of the issue:

"Google may block sign-in attempts from some apps or devices that do not use modern security standards. Since these apps and devices are easier to break into, blocking them helps keep your account safe."

Although this would make sense - in the light of the scale of its impact (mentioned earlier) - this "improvement" seems to be a little controversial...
